On June 22, 2023, a joyous celebration of art and culture unfolded at The Amistad Center, as the Farmington Valley (CT) Chapter paid tribute to artist Donald Boudreaux. The occasion was marked by a reception and a special viewing of his work at the Amistad Center, creating an enriching atmosphere of artistic appreciation.
What made this day even more remarkable was the Chapter's heartfelt contribution of Boudreaux's artwork, "Apartheid on Jazz," to the Amistad Center for Art and Culture at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. This act of generosity culminated a year-long fundraising campaign.
"Apartheid on Jazz" is a mixed media masterpiece, telling a poignant story of Hurricane Katrina and commemorating the late member, Deirdre L. Bibby. Boudreaux's work, which is portrayed on a door, symbolizes the doors that were forced open during the search and recovery phase post-Katrina. It also reflects the idea of open doors inviting visitors into the warm homes of his childhood neighborhood, where some of his family members still reside.
Donald Boudreaux's artistic themes beautifully capture various aspects of the African American experience. This artwork, "Apartheid on Jazz," now proudly stands as the first of Boudreaux's creations in The Amistad Center's distinguished collection, adding to the tapestry of culture, history, and art.
